Title : Interplay between multi-scale cosmic ray driven plasma instabilities
Team : MIS-PLASMA

The aim of this work is to study how different plasma instabilities might interplay and compete in order to amplify background magnetic fields (such as the interstellar medium magnetic field) to levels and scales that allow for the observed acceleration of Cosmic Rays (CR) in astrophysical shocks. We study instabilities triggered by the streaming of the CR themselves, using both analytical and large scale kinetic simulations. We explore the non-linear behavior of individual instabilities, as well as the interplay of several instabilities, such as the Bell, firehose or Weibel instabilities, and show that they may be avenues to amplify magnetic fields to the necessary amplitude and length scales.
